Lazy days of summer? Not hardly! We covered a lot of news and information in this edition of the User Group meeting.
Intro
As always, we can't do this without help from our great sponsors. We introduce the founders of the user group and then talk about our sponsors, PowerDNN, who provide this website and the food and drinks when we do meet in person, and J&S Tech Designs who provide the gotomeeting when we meet virtually as we did this time.
We also point out the big news of the day: Shaun Walker, father of DotNetNuke, has retired from the company to seek other opportunities. The news broke on the day of the user group meeting so its quite fresh! Plus, the day after the meeting, Shaun announced his new venture, Siliqon.com. (Yes, we did look under the covers to be sure it was built with DNN. We would have freaked if it was a WordPress site :-)
News
Not a lot of news from DNN Corporate. Maybe lazy days of summer applies? Jim Nagy reports:
Upcoming Conferences; Call for DNN Day
DNN Con is scheduled again for November 7-8 in Palm Beach Florida. OK, we're getting closer to a winter getaway, but it's still not February. The other side of the pond announced their upcoming meeting. DNN-Connect.org will meet on May 29 and 30 in Millau, France.
What about all you other folks? What are you doing in May if you can't afford a trip to France? We have a suggestion.
The Chicago User Group hosted a Day of DNN a few years back, and has since gracefully stepped aside for other bigger meetings instead of scheduling another Day. We think users need to get together, and the weekend of May 30 is a great time to do so, so we are planning a user group meeting for Saturday, May 30. It'll be an all-day event and have pizza (Chicago-style) and seminars somewhere downtown like at a school or something. We're working on the details.
We encourage all User Groups around the world to do likewise. Let's have a Worldwide DNN User Group Day. We're asking the DNN-Connect folks to consider streaming something in the afternoon Saturday or recording something from their first day so we can incorporate it, but mostly we ask that all User Groups just plan to get together and share knowledge. If your group is small, consider driving over to another group and pooling resources. If anybody wants to set up Skype sessions or GoToMeetings and talk between two or three groups, all the better! Then post your shared info online to share it outside your group.
That's it in a nutshell, but here's the video clip where we mention it during the meeting.
Review of Will Morgenweck's Community Portal in 45 Minutes Webinar
Will did a great job of putting a social site together using DNN Platform and a few extra modules from the store. Unfortunately, the transmission technology failed miserably, so it's really hard to follow him. He said during the webinar that he'll write a blog entry describing the process, which is great, but in the meantime, we give a synopsis of the presentation.
SQL table monitoring code and technique
Phil Wegrzyn is in the middle of a big database transformation project and during his work he wrote some SQL to track what tables changes occurred, so he could debug something. Turns out this code and his technique can be used generically for module development and even to have a better understanding of how some modules work. Phil gives us this tech talk.
Closing remarks
We thank folks and talk about next month.
