DotNetNuke Around the Web

ASP.Net WebForms and MVC are Dead to Me

Thu, 02 Feb 2012 03:03:43 GMT

ripAfter working with ASP.Net Webforms for the past decade, the time has come to move on. I have enjoyed using Webforms and I was pretty good at bending ASP.Net to my will. Having recently tried some newer web frameworks I find that I am more productive than ever before. Over the past couple of years I have dabbled with ASP.Net MVC, jQuery and even WebFormsMVP but none of them truly held my interest for long. I never felt like they really offered solutions to problems that I was worried about. Because of my involvement with DotNetNuke, and the fact that it relies heavily on Webforms, I found that I couldn’t justify the use of some of these technologies. Things like WebFormsMVP added too much friction to the way I was used to working. ASP.Net MVC couldn’t really work in any meaningful way with DotNetNuke. And jQuery was a nice add-on, but it didn’t fundamentally change the way I developed modules.

Sun, 29 Jan 2012 10:43:04 GMT

DotNetNuke Media Module Header

The next version of the Media Module for DotNetNuke is once again here! In previous releases, ground-breaking features like oEmbed were added. In future releases, expect to see mobile rendering and HTML5 to be in the mix. Today, there were a handful of things that needed to be taken care of before taking this module to the next level.

Open Graph Protocol Module for DotNetNuke Version 01.01.01 Released

People Sharing Content

First, I would like to thank everyone for the feedback and support since the original release of this module. It’s been quite interesting. This module has many things planned for it, but I did want to make sure it lived in the wild for a bit to fix any issues that have been found before I begin adding more features. As it turns out, there were two significant fixes that were required.

Open Graph Protocol Module for DotNetNuke Released

Sat, 07 Jan 2012 07:22:33 GMT

Sharing Content on a Tablet

Many of you are not even aware that the Open Graph Protocol even exists. However, it has been the backbone of inter-connected websites ever since social sharing of content and web pages has existed. This is the standard that Facebook, Google+, and others have adopted to properly connect, share, and display content from site to site when a visitor decides to share it. Of course, like any other standard, every site varies on how well they adopt this particular standard.

DotNetNuke Then and Now Videos

Sat, 17 Dec 2011 01:26:46 GMT

From DotNetNuke 3 to DotNetNuke 6

If you’ve been in the DotNetNuke community for as long as I have and attend any event, you have undoubtedly run into people that haven’t used DNN in years. In fact, the most common type of person I run into with this situation is someone that last looked at DotNetNuke when it was version 3! I wanted to take some time and generate some videos to hopefully invite those people back to take a new look at what is essentially a totally different platform today!

Clint Patterson shooting an arrow at DotNetNuke World

Any of you that attended DotNetNuke World this year would probably agree… There were few moments when you didn’t see me holding a camera. Most often, I was pointing it at you too, hoping to catch you having the fun time that we all know you were. While I am not a professional photographer, I definitely do my best to create the best images possible. Hopefully the pictures below reflect that.

Restrictive Versus Non-Restrictive Open Source Licenses

Mon, 12 Dec 2011 21:38:46 GMT

I am by no means an expert on open source licenses. I am not a lawyer. I have, however, been part of the overall open source software community since roughly around 1999 or 2000. During this time, I’ve dealt with open source software almost exclusively. It’s a blur at this point. I began at a time where PHP was king, and Microsoft’s (now Classic) ASP was trying to get in on the party. Long story short, I found out immediately that I loved open source software and I never looked back.

Two Mobile-Centric DotNetNuke Presentations Coming to BayDUG

Sat, 10 Dec 2011 00:48:41 GMT

Website on a Tablet

We just had the first Bay Area DotNetNuke User Group (BayDUG) meeting after having a break for over a year now. It was a great presentation. Chris Hammond did an overview of the features that DotNetNuke now offers to people that enable them to being rolling out their mobile-friendly websites. As great as the overview was, it was missing something… Why would you use one feature over another? What should I think about before deciding the “best way” for my website when building my mobile-friendly site?

Securing .Net Web Apps

Mon, 28 Nov 2011 11:24:47 GMT

informationsecurityFrom time to time I run across some great development resources on the web that are worth sharing. The below list of blog posts by Troy Hunt is a great starting point if you want to find out about the biggest threats to the security of your websites and the techniques you can use in your development and site administration efforts to prevent such exploits. While we take every effort to ensure that the core framework remains secure, there is still a lot of control that is left in the hands of module developers and site administrators.

DotNetNuke World 2011: My Presentation

Will Strohl speaking at DotNetNuke World 2011

I look forward to many things at DotNetNuke World – the networking, the events, the people, and more. But one of the things I enjoy immensely is preparing a presentation for people. This year, my presentation for DNN World was DotNetNuke Widgets, from A to Z. Widgets (a.k.a., skin widgets) in DNN are largely misunderstood and seldom used.

DotNetNuke Super Fan 2011 Results

Mon, 21 Nov 2011 01:59:24 GMT

DotNetNuke SUPER Fan 2011 Contest Ceremony

It was quite a fun thing to run the DotNetNuke SUPER Fan contest for the first time ever. Though it really was a lot of work both for me and each of the entrants, it was more than worth the effort. I was very honored to be able to run this contest, because as you probably realize, being a self-proclaimed super fan of DotNetNuke myself, I couldn’t wait to be able to officially designate and announce “the” SUPER fan. This is just what we did at DotNetNuke World.

DotNetNuke Alert: The Modules are Missing!

Wed, 02 Nov 2011 18:55:07 GMT

Milk-cartonIf you have downloaded and installed DotNetNuke 6.1 you have probably noticed that the core modules are “missing” from the DotNetNuke packages. This is a large change from every previous version of DotNetNuke. Ever since Shaun first released DotNetNuke in 2002, we have included a number of modules in the core platform. How these modules have been packaged has changed over the years, but customers have become accustomed to seeing them.

In DotNetNuke 6.0 we provided a great new capability that integrates the DotNetNuke Forge and DotNetNuke Store (SnowCovered) into the core platform. This feature means that every module in the Forge can be quickly discovered and installed into the platform in just a couple of clicks. If you haven’t tried this feature, I definitely recommend you give it a try. It is definitely one of the great new features in the DotNetNuke 6 platform.

The Changing Face of DotNetNuke Product Management

Tue, 01 Nov 2011 21:41:37 GMT

Janus_coinDotNetNuke has undergone many changes over the last 8 years in the way the product is developed and managed. Having been part of the main engineering and product teams from the early days of the Open Source project I have had a number of roles on the team. Last year I moved from being focused on application development as part of the Engineering team to being more focused on product management. A big part of my role on the product management team was handling release management.

DotNetNuke on the Gartner Magic Quadrant!

Mon, 31 Oct 2011 17:47:42 GMT

Gartner Magic Quadrant DotNetNukeGartner's Magic Quadrants provide a graphical competitive positioning of technology solution providers in markets where growth is high and provider differentiation is distinct. Professional organizations use Magic Quadrants as a first step to understanding the technology providers they might consider for a specific investment opportunity, as the graphical representation and research material provides them with a wide-angle view of the relative positions of the various competitors in that space.

I am proud to announce that DotNetNuke has achieved representation on a Gartner Magic Quadrant for the first time in 2011!

Movember 2011 Get those Mustaches ready

Tue, 25 Oct 2011 20:41:00 GMT

Chris-Hammond-2Dear DotNetNuke Community,

Movember is coming up, and I am getting the DotNetNuke Team going again this year. For those of you who weren’t with the company last year Movember is this. You start with a clean shaven face on November 1st, and grow a mustache (not a beard, not a goatee) for the ENTIRE month, to raise awareness (and money) for cancers that effect men, primarily prostate cancer.

2011 Open Source CMS Market Share Survey

Fri, 21 Oct 2011 06:16:29 GMT

waterandstoneWater & Stone ( a full service digital agency located in Bali, Indonesia ) is once again in the process of conducting their annual Open Source CMS Market Survey ( formerly referred to as the CMS Wire Open Source CMS Market Survey ). The survey is intended to measure the rate of adoption and brand strength of the most popular open source web content management systems and provide consumers with important information relevant to selecting a CMS for their organizations.

Last year at around this time, I posted a blog which was focused on increasing awareness of the survey and encouraging community members to participate in hopes that we would get better representation amongst the other CMS systems and improve on our results from the 2009 survey so that they were in closer alignment with our actual standing in the CMS market.

I am happy to report that our efforts paid off, as DotNetNuke received a very favorable review in the 2010 survey. The Rate of Adoption was analyzed using a variety of different techniques including downloads, surveys, third party analysis services, developer support, and books in print, and DotNetNuke was consistently ranked in the top 5 of all open source CMS systems included in the survey. And from a Brand Strength perspective, we also made the top 5 in terms of project site popularity, brand familiarity, conversion rate, and product preference – but most important of all we significantly improved our brand sentiment score, moving from position #20 in 2009 all the way up to #7 in 2010! The full report can be reviewed here.

Anyways, as I mentioned earlier, Water & Stone recently announced that they are running the Open Source CMS Market Survey for 2011. Based on our strong showing in 2010 and the fact that surveys like these can have tremendous influence on consumers and customers in the market, I highly encourage everyone in the DotNetNuke community to take a few minutes and complete the questions located at the link below:

2011-OSCMS-Survey

Your ongoing commitment to the DotNetNuke product is appreciated and helps demonstrate a high level of confidence in our ecosystem. The release of DotNetNuke 6 this summer has pushed our Rate of Adoption to new heights, and if we can complement that with a solid demonstration of Brand Strength I think it will definitely cement our position amongst the top 4 open source CMS systems in the world today.

Using jQuery in your content to add some flare to your DotNetNuke website

Tue, 18 Oct 2011 04:59:00 GMT

With all of the changes to DotNetNuke 6, a lot can be lost in the fact that you actually maintain the content of your website, and while the maintenance UI has changed, the content that you present is still up to you. A CMS can only do so much for displaying you content, if you want to do some fancy things, branch out of your standard HTML.

I recently wanted to do a couple of things for my car website (yes, I’m a car guy, so it is easy to use the website for examples).

  1. I wanted to have a random image loaded in the top portion of the pages of the website, changing, or randomly loading, on each page load (not rotating live on the page).
  2. I wanted to display a list of recent photos on the home page, and when you click on one of them I wanted them to open up in a light box.

I could have done this in any number of ways, but I chose to implement some simple jQuery for each, below I will show you how.

First things first, the website uses my free DotNetNuke skin, MultiFunction, available via Codeplex. I have some example documentation on how to customize the CSS for the skin to make your site unique, feel free to check out the Documentation page.

Using request filters in DotNetNuke to restrict website access

Tue, 11 Oct 2011 06:11:00 GMT

Have you ever had the need to blog a range of IP Addresses from accessing your website? Or perhaps, setup a website that is only accessible to a specific range of IP Addresses? DotNetNuke Request Filters are a great tool for getting such functionality configured, all configurable within your browser, without needing access to the settings in IIS.

DotNetNuke Site of the Month Winner – September 2011

Wed, 05 Oct 2011 23:00:10 GMT

I would like to congratulate DNN Outsourcing, this month’s DotNetNuke Site of the Month winner! Thank you, Ivan Strigo for submitting the Club Seat Web Site (www.clubseat.nl).

Club Seat will now be our final entry into the DotNetNuke Site of the Year Contest. The winner of the Site of the Year Contest will be announced at the DNN After Dark Party at DotNetNuke World on November 10, 2011. The Site of the Year Contest is now open on the conference web site where you may vote once per day until October 31, 2011. So vote now and vote often!

clip_image002

According to Ivan, Club Seat is used by (European manufactured) Seat car owners in the Netherlands. It is an interactive portal for retaining clients loyal to the Seat car brand. Can owners can register, add preferences and get special offers from dealers and partners about upcoming events.

  • DNN Version Used
    Community edition
  • Key features of the site
CRM, events, news, special offers and promotions by partners and dealers, driver profile/personalization, segmentation.
  • Business value offered by the site
Ability to efficiently manage and organize campaigns using data from various interactions with users via custom built-in CRM tool, online and offline, all enabled in one solution with this retention, loyalty and prospecting web portal.
  • Modules used
All modules are custom.  It took us with in-house team of five people full time for seven months to complete the project on tight schedule. DotNetNuke was great help as stable framework to speed up development of complete solution and bring it to daily use by many (what would otherwise won't be possible in this amount of time with custom developed ASP.NET/MSSQL web app).

Congratulations to Ivan and the development team at DNN Outsourcing

Wed, 05 Oct 2011 22:08:22 GMT

DNNProductsI am pleased to announce that DotNetNuke 6.0.2 is officially released. This maintenance release further solidifies DotNetNuke 6.0 and resolves a few outstanding issues which were not addressed in the 6.0.1 release. Build Better Facebook Fan Pages with 520 Grid System

Mon, 03 Oct 2011 18:54:00 GMT

If you're running an online business I assume you have already designed your fan pages on Facebook. If you haven't I don't think it's too late to jump into the bandwagon and join everyone out there. Many companies like Intel or Nokia have their own design on this social network and it creates quite a nice experience for users instead of staring at the old blue default color of Facebook.

Top 100 Fastest-Growing Companies in B.C. for 2010

Wed, 14 Sep 2011 17:10:03 GMT

BIV Fastest Growing Companies in BC

Last year at around this time, I posted a blog announcing the fact that DotNetNuke Corporation had achieved the distinction of being recognized by Business in Vancouver (BIV) as one of the Top 100 Fastest-Growing Companies in B.C. for 2009. At that time I also made a bold prediction that we would make the list again this year… I even went as far to say that we would would crack the Top 10!

Well, I am very pleased to reveal that we have been recognized as one of the Top 100 Fastest-Growing Companies in B.C. for 2010 ( announced this week in BIV Issue 1142, September 12-20, 2011 ). This year we improved our ranking by 7 positions to come in at #17 overall, with a 5 year revenue growth rate exceeding 1800%! This distinction places us in the Top 5 fastest growing Technology firms in B.C., a substantial accomplishment given Vancouver’s booming high-tech industry. So in this respect, my prediction did come true ;)

DotNetNuke quoted in USA Today

Wed, 14 Sep 2011 07:35:05 GMT

USA Today

The Microsoft BUILD conference ( formerly PDC ) is going on this week in Anaheim, California. Promoted as “a new event that shows modern hardware and software developers how to take advantage of the future of Windows”, BUILD included a detailed preview of the next major release of Windows, code-named “Windows 8”. As previously reported, Windows 8 offers support for ARM-based chipsets which means that it is intended to work across a spectrum of devices, including mobile phones and tablets. Microsoft also detailed new tools for developers to help write applications for the more than 1 billion people around the world who use Microsoft Windows every day. These items were the focus of a USA Today article published earlier today where I was provided with the unique opportunity to share my opinions on Windows 8 with respected journalist,  Byron Acohido.

Remember remember this coming Movember

Fri, 09 Sep 2011 00:23:07 GMT

If you follow any of my blogs, you may remember all the discussion last fall about Movember. Yes, you read that correctly, Movember, take the N in November and replace it with an M, Movember!

Why would you ever rename November to Movember? To raise awareness for cancers that affect men, primarily prostate cancer, but others as well. The basic premise of Movember is this, for the entire month, you grow a mustache. How simple is that? Start on November 1st, clean shaven, and finish on November 30th, clean shaven except for your mustache! All while raising awareness, and money for research into cancers that affect men.

The Personal Connection

Earlier this year my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. While he is fortunate that they believe it to be caught very early there is always the risk that it can spread, He is getting ready to start the process of treatment. So obviously, my connection to Movember this year is even stronger than last year.

Movember 2010

Last year we formed a DotNetNuke team on Movember.com, which we plan to do again this year, just as soon as they open up the process. I’ll post a blog, and update this blog post as well, with a link to the team and how you can join.

We had 38 folks join the team, and a lot more donate to the cause. While not everyone who joined the team worked for DotNetNuke Corporation, a number of the members were from our offices around the world. Check out this slide show comparing some of the employees to famous Mo’s (mustaches)

Then of course there is the fact that last year I said if I personally raised $1,000, I would shave my head at the end of the month. Well, I did, and I did.

To be honest, my wife was NOT happy about the head shaving thing, and most of the office was pretty put off by it as well! I won't be making that challenge again, not this year, but perhaps I will come up with something.

Goal for 2011

In 2010 we raised almost $7k for Movember, for 2011 we’re setting a goal of $10k, doable, but it is definitely going to take some work to get there! We’re going to need to grow our team, and we’re going to need to get everyone involved to try and raise money. I think everyone should set a goal

Getting Ready

So you have just under two months to start getting ready for Movember. Most importantly, prep your significant other for the fact that you are going to grow the mustache! If you can't grow a MO, then perhaps you can find a surrogate to do it for you!

DotNetNuke Site of the Month Winner - August

Wed, 07 Sep 2011 17:59:09 GMT

Congratulations to the August DotNetNuke Site of the Month Winner, Piedmont Community College (http://www.piedmontcc.edu/). Thank you Kevin Tyburski for submitting the Piedmont Site. Piedmont Community College will also be entered into our Site of the Year contest. The winner of that contest will be announced at DotNetNuke World in Orlando on November 10th

clip_image002

Kevin tells us that "We're very excited here at Piedmont Community College to win this award! Hopefully we have done DNN proud with what we're trying to present."

We're using 5.6.2 Professional Edition (transition from Community)

We wanted to meet four different objectives when going through our first complete web overhaul in almost 10 years here at Piedmont Community College. Consistency, collaboration, community and cost. Since we are a community college our areas of marketing and information are much broader than most businesses. We offer over 40 programs of study at multiple locations, covering two counties in North Carolina and helping groups ranging from high school students, current students, retraining businesses to local involvement with our Foundation and community events. The first initial focus was the need to have the information shared and consistent between multiple areas on our web site ensuring it to be correct. From our research gathered we also wanted to display the information in multiple ways based on generational marketing. DotNetNuke has the all the options and tools to achieve this in an easy and functional way.

Making it easy was also a major portion of collaboration. With having multiple locations and many programs of study we needed faculty and staff to be trained on an easy to use system and to be in complete control of the information, while mirroring the approval processes we currently have in place. The Professional Edition allowed us to do all of this seamlessly. It offered the granular permissions, document management and the ability to set up the approval processes based on content. It couldn't have worked out better for us.

Lastly, both community and cost were probably the most important part of the decision. Having a knowledgeable and large community of users. DotNetNuke is head and shoulders above others with users, support and forums as a CMS provider. DotNetNuke was also hands-down the best when comparing cost with features offered with opportunity for expansion. We started with the Community edition and seamlessly transition to Professional. We're continuing to implement new and exciting parts to our web site on a regular basis. We're excited about what the future has in store at Piedmont Community College using DotNetNuke as our CMS."

The September contest is now open, so please submit your DotNetNuke sites and tell your friends to support you by voting on Facebook. And don’t forget, in order to be eligible for our year end “Site of the Year” Award which will be announced in November at DotNetNuke World you must win one Site of the Month Contest.

2011 DevProConnections Community Choice Awards

Thu, 25 Aug 2011 18:58:57 GMT

Vote For DotNetNuke in 2011 DevProConnections Community Choice AwardsEvery year the readers of the DevProConnections magazine vote for their favorite products and services from across the software industry. This year DotNetNuke has been nominated in the Content Management System category – a category which is highly competitive based on the wide variety of CMS products on the market today. To show your support of the fact that DotNetNuke is the most widely deployed CMS that is native to the Microsoft platform, we would be extremely grateful if you took a moment to vote for DotNetNuke in this years contest. And if you are scratching your head for a killer quote please use the very catchy tagline created by our very own Gilles Chalon: “DotNetNuke 6 is Sexy!” ( it sounds much better with his French accent ). Thank you for your support.

DotNetNuke 6.0.1 Released

Wed, 24 Aug 2011 21:47:25 GMT

products2I am pleased to announce that DotNetNuke 6.0.1 is officially released. This maintenance release was focused on resolving a number of issues that were found in the 6.0.0 release. Given the extensive set of changes in DotNetNuke 6.0 we recognized the need to quickly identify and resolve issues discovered by our customers as they tried the new release in production environments. This maintenance release further improves what many customers have already told us was a pretty stable release.

Using the DotNetNuke Azure Accelerator

Thu, 18 Aug 2011 15:01:22 GMT

dnn-in-cloudLate last year, I began work on getting DotNetNuke to run on Windows Azure. After a few months of research and numerous dead-ends, I finally had a fully working prototype. During this same period, David Rodríguez, was also doing some work with DotNetNuke and Azure as well.

After working through a few dead-ends of his own, David found the Azure Accelerator project from Slalom Consulting and decided to use this as a base for developing a DotNetNuke version.

A Word About Unloading Resources in Core Framework

Fri, 29 Jul 2011 20:28:00 GMT

For those of you who are very tedious about front-end performance of websites, you’re probably already  familiar with a few techniques to minimize loading resources from the core DotNetNuke framework such as CSS and Javascripts. As long as those files are just for presentation and can be addressed in skin.css or skin.js, this approach helps tremendously with site performance and creates a much better experience for site visitors.

I consider myself to be pretty detail-oriented when it comes to designing and building websites. I spend quite a bit of time on the very small details until I’m happy with it. Sometimes it’s a good thing; sometimes it’s bad because the ROI might not be worth it.

DotNetNuke 6 Videos

Fri, 22 Jul 2011 04:51:00 GMT

In case you didn’t hear, DotNetNuke 6 was released yesterday. In preparation for the release I went up to our Engineering office in Langley Canada (I work out of our San Mateo, California office) to sit down with some of our developers and have them do some demonstrations of some of the new features in DotNetNuke 6.

These are all relatively short videos, with the goal of them being under 10 minutes, one or two is slightly longer than that. They are all free to watch! Here’s a listing of those videos, and URLs to them in the DotNetNuke Video Library. In no particular order.

Brief Overview of DotNetNuke 6.0 UI Changes

Mon, 18 Jul 2011 14:55:00 GMT

Over the years I have been a strong web standards advocate and implemented most of my projects using its foundations. Since I joined DotNetNuke Corp. in mid-March, I was lucky to be part of the transformation of the administrative user interface (UI) to a modern standard. This effort brings many benefits to the platform for both business and end-users.

If you are not familiar with many benefits web standards have to offer, I suggest reading a few helpful posts by the folks at Web Standards Project and the Mozzila Wiki before continue reading this post to understand why DotNetNuke has gone through a major overhaul of UI changes.

Almost There – DotNetNuke 6 Release Candidate

Fri, 15 Jul 2011 00:18:17 GMT

60After 8 months of effort the finish line is in sight. With almost 3000 code checkins touching more than 2000 individual files, this release has been monumental in it’s scope compared to most DotNetNuke releases. Not since the days of DotNetNuke 2.0 and 3.0 have we accomplished so much in a single release. In spite of the sheer number of changes we have made, DotNetNuke 6 is one of the most stable platform versions in quite a while. That is not just my opinion but the opinion of the vast majority of people participating in our beta testing.

Speaking at the St. Louis Day of .NET 2011

Fri, 08 Jul 2011 04:36:51 GMT

So this year will be my 3rd year, (would be my 4th if I hadn’t bailed at the last minute on year 1), that I will be speaking at the St. Louis Day(s) of .Net. If you haven’t been to the STLDODN you should definitely check it out. It is a great two day event, and at $125 (if you register by 7/8/2011) the price can hardly be beat!

The event is being held this year on August 5th and 6th, 2011. Again at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, MO, about 10 minutes from where I used to live (two moves ago now).

Read the full blog post for all the details.

DotNetNuke 6.0 Beta 2

Thu, 07 Jul 2011 21:47:06 GMT

60The clock is winding down on the DotNetNuke 6 release. All of the features have been integrated and we are now focused exclusively on polishing the app before we ship later this month. At this point we have identified all of the issues we plan to resolve for the initial launch and are working through final phases of the testing process. In order to assist people in planning for a smooth upgrade process for 6.0 we are providing a second beta release so that people can retest upgrades and installations which may have had serious issues with Beta 1. If you find an issue we ask that you enter it in the bug tracker so that we can evaluate whether it a showstopping issue or whether it is something that could be held for our first 6.x maintenance release which we expect to be about a month after the DotNetNuke 6.0 launch.

A new free video series, DotNetNuke Module Development

Wed, 25 May 2011 23:21:00 GMT

If you haven’t checked out the DotNetNuke Video Library lately, you really should, there is a lot of great content in there. I just uploaded 5 new videos as part of a new series that I am recording.

Beginning DotNetNuke Module Development, creating a Task Manager module for DNN. This will be a series of videos that get created over the next couple of months revolving around the creation of an open source Task Manager module. The module will be part of the DotNetNuke Forge, and the source code will be hosted on Codeplex.com.

The first videos show you how to get up and running with a new project, creating the project in Visual Studio using a template, how to install the module, and how to create the module in the Forge and how to use Codeplex for source control. The next round of videos (coming in the next couple of weeks) will get you into the development aspects of DotNetNuke.

You can check out the first 5 videos now in the Video Library, or using these direct links.

  1. Task Manager Series Introduction
  2. Creating the Task Manager Project
  3. Task Manager solution overview and installation
  4. Creating a project in the DotNetNuke Forge
  5. Adding your source code to TFS on Codeplex
  6. More coming soon!

For a continually updated list of the videos in the series, check out the Module Development Wiki page which has the videos listed, and will be updated as new videos are added.

DotNetNuke Design Challenge: Cast your Vote and Win Daily Prizes!

Wed, 27 Apr 2011 19:35:00 GMT

The DotNetNuke Design Challenge announced a few weeks ago and the submissions are all in. I know many of you are as excited as I am to see what our community has produced this year. My first impression is that every year we can see our community grows from creative aspect to technical implementation. You’ll agree with me when you see the published submissions here.

The next step is pretty simple: voting!

We’re now open for public voting for the ‘Community Favorite’. You can vote once a day and be automatically entered into a daily drawing to win prizes. But before you jump off and start reviewing designs and voting for your favorite, make sure you read the notes below.

DotNetNuke Design Challenge 2011, Let Your Creative Juices Flow!

Thu, 17 Mar 2011 14:49:00 GMT

The skin contest last year was a great opportunity for many people to show off their skills while ‘giving back’ to the community with their free skins and design.

Since the technology landscape is always changing, the User Experience team thinks it’s time to challenge our community once again in the DotNetNuke Design Challenge so everyone can get involved by building something cool (if you haven’t already).

As you might know, DotNetNuke skinning involves more than just writing semantic markup and packaging files; we want to show the world the powerful skinning engine with freedom to creativity. We are proud to bring you the third contest this year! There are fewer categories this year and more awesome prizes!

New(er) Default.css Cleanup from UX Team

Mon, 27 Sep 2010 00:04:00 GMT

As you might have seen a blog post came out in the summer about the process of cleaning out default.css.

Lance Long, a new UX team volunteer, and I picked up the default.css again and worked on it last week. We removed module specific selectors for ease of management and eliminate unnecessary selectors being loaded on the page when you don't need it along with some CSS shorthands.

For module specific CSS, we move them to the following files and created a few gemini issues:

Go ahead and get the latest beta version, test it out and let us know if you have encounter anything funky. We'll look into it and try to address them. We aim to create a cleaner CSS file for the framework where reduce redundancy and give design control back to front-end engineers and web designers.

There will be some heavy testing coming from our team and I hope you can give us a hand in cleaning this up and bring it to the standards that we deserved.

Grab the default.css beta file on Codeplex.
